Stemware

por | | 0 comments

You can call me conservative, but I have never been a fan of the garter toss at weddings. The whole thing just makes me avert my eyes. Until I set my eyes on this provocative little number. . .
StemwareDoes it not make you do a double-take? A chic alternative to what you you usually find out there. If you must garter, then I suggest something along these lines, designed by La Boheme. Thanks to The Brides Cafe for pointing it out!

Title: Milli Vanilli - Nice N Easy
Title: Nice and Easy
A video that I created for my A-Level art exam project.

Theme: 'Transitions'
Song: Soldier's Poem - Muse
Exam Time: 12 hours
Editing Software: Final Cut Studio Pro

(Please click 'watch in high quality' [beneath 'Views'] to watch!)

The video is projected in the final piece alongside a second video projection of five pieces of fruit rotting, which can be found under the following link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsYzSUigUgw

-----

The exam piece, centred around the theme of 'Transitions', takes its inspiration from the short movie Evolution, produced by Ogilvy & Mather as part of the 'Campaign For Beauty' by cosmetics giant, Dove. Whilst the concept has been extracted, the style and motion of this video is vastly different from that of Dove's.

The project combines two entirely separate transitions: time-lapsed rotting fruit, and a stylized video of an ordinary woman being transformed into a beautiful model for a cosmetics company. These two seemingly bizarre transitions present a stark contrast of 'synthetic' transition against 'organic' transition, and highlight the differences between each. As the fruit both rots and then replenishes, the viewer is left with an ambiguous interpretation as to how this parallels the video. On the one hand, the time-reversed clip of the natural decayed mess blossoming into plush, unblemished fruit parallels the face in the video by becoming falsely beautified and idealized. The fruit itself is, indeed, artificially enhanced by supermarkets who attempt to give an ideal image to their products with the use of synthetic pesticides and preservatives. On the other hand, the rotting of the fruit marks a deterioration of reality, a decay of moral values and honesty, and is representational of what occurs behind the ideal process of making-up models used as portrayals of 'ideal' beauty. The words of the song, which state "there's no justice in the world", reflect this view. The entire video shows how the 'ideal' beauty is not ideal by self-infliction, due to its artificiality.

The title, 'Nice and Easy', the hair company supposedly being advertised for in the video, holds the implication that beauty on the face of advertising is both effortless and pleasant. The content of the video contradicts its own title as it displays how the beauty is actually backed by an extensive procedure of transformation by make-up as well as digital editing. The smooth, transitional style of the video, with gentle fades, seamless transitions between clips and a smooth backing track, exemplifies the fluidity of the transition. The style is both surreal, as the entire process seems beyond reality, and serene, as an ironic backdrop to the horrible truth of the beauty industry. The final scene comments on how universal this truth is, as the individual face finally becomes part of an anonymous 'ideal' lost in a sea of other similar package fronts. The piece also questions the reality of this ideal image, as the final face is so different from the original after such an elaborate transition.

Etsy Find: Nature Favors Bird Seed Favors

Etsy Find: Nature Favors Bird Seed Favors(Image via Etsy-Naturefavor)

Another great Etsy find. We love Etsy and our latest find is no exception. Take a look at the store of Nature Favors. The line of eco-friendly creative favors is incredible.

Like the favor shown above-the Heart Shaped Birdseed Wedding Favors. Aren't they just the cutest? Plus, they're eco-friendly, and hand-made exclusively from all natural ingredients. A loop is made from hemp twine and is formed at the top of each heart, allowing you to display them as a yard decoration in the location of your choice. The price is also easy to swallow too-just $24.95 for 25 or 50 for $49.95. Nature Favors also makes FREE custom tags to go along with the favors.

Their suggestion for a centerpiece: use flower pots to hold tree branches and then hang these bird seed hearts on them for decorations. Place a note at each centerpiece to tell your guests to take one home to feed the birds. Use them to decorate individual place settings, put them in handmade baskets to hand out as favors, or even use as napkin holders.

These would be so perfect for every bridal shower but especially a cute garden party. Of course they would also be great for a wedding. Nature Favors also makes duckie bird seed favors for baby showers and earthbloom favors in a variety of shapes for bridal showers and weddings, too. I could see myself using these as favors for everything-they're that cute!

Portrait of a honeymoon

por | | 0 comments
I think most people will agree that the honeymoon is one of the best parts of your wedding. Let's face it, after all your hard work, it's the payoff (aside from the happy, life-long marriage of course). You and your love get to take off on a trip by yourselves and just bask in the glow of being married.

How do you decide where to go? Many factors (probably most importantly budget) can dictate your choice. For my husband and I, our criteria were:

1. Europe (for the historical tourism).
2. Somewhere we'd never been before.
3. Somewhere we could get some beach time.
4. A place where we had some knowledge of the language.

For our honeymoon, that spelled a trip Portugal. We rented a car and traveled from Sintra, to the Algarve and Lisbon. It. Was. Awesome. The best trip of my life so far, and at least once a week for the last 17 months I've turned to Jim and said "Let's go back. Seriously, like, right now". Sigh. Hopefully we will someday.

Portrait of a honeymoon
Our first night in Sintra, the "medieval city". I just loved our hotel, the Palacio Seteais. We arrived earlier in the day and had to wait a few hours to check-in, so we headed to the hotel restaurant and ordered a typical Portuguese meal for lunch, bacalhau (dried salt cod) and vinho verde (literally 'green' wine, made from very immature grapes). Yum. Now Jim might tell you that at this point I was falling asleep and ever so-slightly sulky, but he's totally lying. Well, exaggerating, anyway. In my defense I was exhausted, jet-lagged and somewhere on our flight I managed to come down with a pretty nasty cold. Illness aside, the best part of day one was when we finally made it to our hotel room and realized we'd been given the honeymoon suite, where they'd left us champagne, strawberries and doces de ovos (egg yolk sweets).

Portrait of a honeymoon
Things were looking up the next day as we had an early breakfast on our balcony. Sintra is situated in the misty hills and the views were amazing. I remember while we were eating the wind picked up a bit and revealed a huge castle that had been obscured by the clouds. . .right in front of us. Beautiful!

Portrait of a honeymoon
Then came more sniffles. Followed by sneezing, coughing and hacking. In which Jim proves his ability to really speak Portuguese. If you can walk into a pharmacy in a foreign country and say "Do you have nasal decongestant?" in another language, then I'm calling you fluent. No arguments.

Portrait of a honeymoonWe took a day trip to Fatima to see the shrine and basilica.

Next stop: The Algarve. This (with some cropping) was the view from our balcony at our hotel, the Almansor. Three days and three nights of sun and crashing waves. This picture has been my computer background for said 17 months. Not exactly helping me get over the experience.

Portrait of a honeymoonThe view from our final hotel, the Dom Pedro Palace. We were pretty beat after the long week and had to get up really early to catch our flight home. So truthfully our time here was was spent looking out this very window, exclaiming over the really cool bathroom, ordering room service and sleeping.

I have to admit, at the time we were under the impression that by heading to Portugal, we were going on the most unique honeymoon ever, but we weren't quite that slick. While we were in line for the rental car I struck up a conversation with an American couple behind us. Not only were they also newly-weds, but we'd gotten married on the same day, in DC, and our new husbands had the same occupation. So much for blazing a trail!

Sniffling aside, I loved every second.
