I've been a fan of scene-stealer Amanda Seyfried since Mean Girls and I'm really excited to see her performance in Mamma Mia. When I got married, I didn't have a videographer. Honestly didn't even think about it twice, I mean, I HATE sitting down for an hour or two to watch family movies, and by eliminating a videographer I was freeing up money in the budget that I could spend on more important things. For the most part, I think most wedding videos are too long and cheesy. I've never regretted it. . .that is, until now.

Just this past Sunday we had a great training seminar Expanding Horizons: Re-Building and Remodeling your business. A lot of really good questions were brought up like: What happens to your business if something happens to you? And What happens if I can’t do a wedding…who is my back up? In answer to the latter of the questions one of our fantastic members thought that we should create a calling tree. I thought this was a fantastic idea.
What would you do if you got into an accident before a big event? What if something happened to a family member and you want to be with that family member instead? These are really tough answers! I know from personal experience my daughter was born on October 1st and I did a full 150 guest wedding on October 7th. It would have been nice to have someone qualified to call on to help – or even do it for me!
How this calling tree will work: 1st any member can call on the coordinator to help, but only consultant level members will be listed, all members will be listed top down in order of rank (Designation 1st and years as a member 2nd).
Example: Let’s say you break a leg and its 2 weeks before the event. You start at the top of the calling tree and explain your situation and see if that person is open and can or wants to help, if not then you move onto the next one, in addition the person that you just called is calling someone on your behalf. This way if you can’t call anyone someone is still calling the next folks on the list. Each person makes one call until someone says yes, I’ll do the wedding for her.
Of course if we work your wedding for you, you’ll need to compensate them for doing so. An agreement will have to be discussed and payment arrangements and pricing made. If you are unable to do that, then the calling list coordinator would be responsible for getting the information needed and arranging an agreement with a spouse, family member, business partner etc.
Of course we are going to need to tweak this tree idea before its implemented. Any feedback? Anyone interested in being on the calling tree?

After his marriage to Sue Jamison in 1994, the two of them spent one year living in the Canadian wilderness living a paleolithic existence. They traveled to Goldsborough Lake ( [show location on an interactive map] 50°41′55″N 89°20′46″W / 50.69861°N 89.34611°W / 50.69861; -89.34611) deep in the Wabakimi and built a cabin with no metal, plastic, or otherwise manufactured tools. They took a store of traditional foods and attempted to supplement it by hunting and trapping. Family and medical emergencies brought them out of the bush on two occasions. Their primitive living experience was filmed by Stroud and released as the 50 minute documentary, Snowshoes and Solitude, which was named Best Documentary at the Muskoka Film Festival and Best Film at the Waterwalker Film Festival.
Thank goodness. Not only does the New Year bring new gowns and new inventory to D.C.'s very own Hitched, but the store is also celebrating its second anniversary with a huge sale on sample items including bridal gowns, veils, shoes and jewelry. To help kick it off right they're having a Sample Sale Soiree on Thursday, January 10th from 5-8pm. First there was Papier Parties now this? I'm just loving the idea of throwing a party around something that can be stressful. The best thing about a sample sale - once you've made your selection, your dress is yours to take home with you!

I had already planned to check out New York based designer Julie Haus' sample sale in the Garment District this week. But after a Sample Sally reader's glowing report and Racked's favorable write-up, I thought I'd better make a beeline for the sale before all the bargains were gone.
At the end of the day yesterday, there were still plenty of goods to be had at the designer's showroom on West 38th Street. Like Haus' previous sample sales, this one had a slew of samples (past and some current season). Also on offer were overstock. Look for fun feminine frocks and tops for spring and summer months. Dresses start at $25 for the "Red Heart" items to $55 for recent season samples. Tops are going from $20 to $45. Bottoms, including shorts have been picked through. But there were still some great long and short wool coats from $45 to $95. The samples here were in great condition unlike other brands where items are unwearable having rips, torn and SAMPLE sharpied on the inside. In the front of the showroom, you'll find overstock pieces from Fall '09.
The designer was on-hand along with her business partner and husband, Jason Alkire to help customers. Jason helps Julie with all things creative with the line. He showed me one of their more popular prints of giraffe spots, which he created by blowing up the spots and if you look closely at a piece with the print, you'll see an actual giraffe drawn on the garment.
Haus is know for her edgy, feminine fabrications and intricate tailoring. You'll find plenty of her signature pieces at this sale and for a fraction of what it sells in stores.

So right now I'm on a search for the perfect chair to fill out that last empty corner of our living room. And while sadly, there is no way this funky piece from Anthropologie will work (it's just a bit too big and well, a bit too much) . . . I love it just the same.

Mark your calendars - First daughter Jenna Bush and her fiancé Henry Hager have announced the date of their wedding. The small ceremony will take place on May 10, at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Are you as disappointed as I am that it's not going to be a "White House Wedding"? Not that I was expecting an invitation or anything, but even though it would have meant less privacy for Jenna - there would have been more press coverage (and therefore more photos with details to oooh and ahhh over) for you and I. Oh well, there's still Barbara. Here's hoping!

The Association of Bridal Consultants is a fantastic organization in many different ways. I currently act as State Coordinator and its my duty to provide networking opportunities and educational opportunities for members. Our corporate website is http://www.bridalassn.com/ and lists international meetings and country wide meetings and educational seminars. For North Carolina we also have our own state website http://www.ncweddingpros.com/ where we list some of our members along with all of the professional events and different bride events we have coming up. I am in the process of updating those two pages and hopefully will have the completed by the end of June.
One of the main portions of membership is the need to have at least 6 hours of education each year in order to renew your membership. If you don't get those 6 hours (it can of course be college credits, other event seminars, etc) the member is not allowed to renew for the current year - until those hours are completed.
The Association does not "certify" wedding planners or other wedding professionals - what we do is have each person earn trademark designations through education and experience. This way someone who has never planned or worked a wedding before cannot call themselves "certified".

Sesame Street is a production of Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit educational organization which also produces Pinky Dinky Doo, The Electric Company, and other programs for children around the world.
On our phone call this past Tuesday Elise Enloe went through the points process for increasing your designation within ABC. I am going to send a 6 part e-mail that describes out each section and the final e-mail will be your totaling sheet, maybe one a month or more, depending on time and complexity of the section. The first section is the easiest – Education and Professional Development.
1. The easiest way to keep track of everything is go to Staples and purchase a 2 inch three ring binder and at least 5 section pieces. Label the first one Education and Professional Development.
2. Next either re-type or use the one from the www.bridalassn.com website and fill out your points as you go, also include documentation as you add each point to your list.
Here is the breakdown on points: · Professional Development Program – if you took the ABC Professional Development Program (full) then you get points for all 7 sections, if you split up the course then add points for each course. Include copies of your certificate.
· Weddings as a business – another course ABC offers, see comments from the PDP above
· Working from home – same as weddings as a business and the PDP above
· Penn Foster Program – if you have graduated from Penn Foster then you get 24 points! Only one point away from earning consultant level!!
· ABC Seminars – These are not state meetings, these are the New Horizons, Expanding Horizons, Cultural Horizons, etc. We just had an Expanding Horizons Seminar in July so if you attended, you received a certificate and you get 2 points so photo copy the certificate put it in your binder and write 2 points on your page!
· Annual Conference – if you’ve attended – not only do you get the significance of attending and how important it can be for your own piece of mind and business but its 5 points!!! Photo copy your certificate and put it in your binder and mark 5 points for you!
· State or Regional Meetings – I coordinate quite a few of these. So far each of our state meetings have been one full day or 6 hours for 1 point. Photo copy your certificate and put it in your binder and mark 1 point for you! Don’t forget to RSVP for our September State meeting. · Other wedding certificate programs – this includes WIPPA or any other community college or online wedding certification program. 5 points, include a copy of your transcript and a copy of your certificate of completion.
· Degrees – pretty self explanatory – include a copy of your degree and you get the points that apply 1.5 for associates, 3 for bachelors, 5 for masters or 6 for doctorate. If you have an Associates and Bachelors the points will be counted for your Bachelors only….
· Industry / business related education 2 to 4 hour seminar - .25 points. These include the training sessions put on by like Chamber of Commerce, ISES, NACE etc, but it must be education and not networking. Include copies of your registration payment or attendance certificate.
· Industry / business related education 2 to 4 hour seminar – see above just longer and more points.
· Industry Related Conferences – we all get those e-mails everyday for Wedding MBA, Special Event, Engage, etc. If you attend keep a copy of your payment for registration and any attendance certificate you may receive.
· Additional University College or Industry course – pretty self explanatory, just send in a copy of the course specific along with your completion certificate.
· Approved Safety or medical course (First Aid/CPR) – great to have!! Attach a copy of your certification and you are done with this one! J We have a CPR certification course scheduled for the end of this month in Charlotte, if you are going to attend please let me know ASAP so I can get you on the roster and its .5 points and you’ll save a life!
Feel free to e-mail or give me a call with any questions!
Now that your documentation is included and you’ve scribbled numbers all over your sheet, add them up – if you are over30 points – fantastic!!! Keep going add your total there. Then grab another copy, fill it out perfectly and neatly and add it to your binder.
You are done with this section – put the binder, three hole punch, pencil, eraser, pen, etc away and wait for the next e-mail! J

Ahh, we think this idea is such a cute way of presenting everyday household items to the bride at the shower. It's a cute yet practical way to give the bride things like laundry detergent. Many showers do it as a gift from all of the bridesmaids or you could do it as a cheaper, more creative bridal shower gift.
Bridal Shower Game: Make this gift into a game. Pass the items out to guests and have the guests hold up the items while someone reads the poem.

If you have any questions, please leave me a comment or email me. You will need 2 12" x 12" sheets in coordinating colors. The first color, cut 1-6" x 12" and score at 2 3/4", 3", 9" and 9 1/4", then cut 3- 5 3/4" by 12" and score at 3" and 9". From the second color cut 4-5 1/2" sqaures, and 1-5 x 12" and score at 5" and 8 1/2". Patterned paper to be cut at 5" square for cover and large openings, 5 x 2" or 2 1/4" for flaps and for back flap I used 2- 2" x 4 3/4" for the piece that glues to the bottom and 4-3" x 4 1/2" on the other flaps.
